Like sports, the arts require controlled movements. Painting, for instance, requires a child to grasp their paint brush and use precision to create an image. With consistency and practice, a young artist may gain more control and refine their mobility - and ultimately, refine their artwork!
Many art forms are often inspired by the world around us. For instance, theatre requires portrayal and imitation. Art forms like theatre require children to observe their surroundings and gather inspiration. In order to achieve this, a child must think critically about their observations: “What am I looking at? How should I interpret what I’m viewing? How can I recreate or represent these observations?”
Children can learn so much through artistic expression! Art allows children to apply concepts they’ve learned in class and observe real-world applications. For instance, visual arts allow children to identify patterns, shapes, and colors, as well as make comparisons.
Having a creative outlet provides an escape from the stressors of a child’s day-to-day life. In fact, participating in the arts has shown to decrease cortisol levels; cortisol is the hormone which causes us to experience stress. Furthermore, art reduces anxiety and decreases the heart rate.
