How to Teach The Importance Of Sharing

Teaching your child how to share benefits them and their social future in many ways. This will help them create and maintain friendships, teach them how to play with others, and help them understand fairness. While your children are young, it can be difficult to teach them how to not be possessive over their toys. In order to show them the value of sharing, they must figure out what makes it worth it.

Why Is Sharing Important?

Children can form strong attachments to objects because they feel a sense of security. Taking away this security will likely result in tantrums, especially when told to share it with another child. Sharing teaches children to be considerate of other people’s feelings and desires, which will benefit them socially. They will see that sharing their belongings and being cooperative will help them acquire playmates. This will help them view sharing as a valuable skill, and can make meeting new friends a lot easier.

When Is My Child Ready?

Age can play a huge role in learning how to share, as well as maturity level. Children younger than age 2 are in a stage where they are self-motivated, and play with themselves rather than with others. After this, they only share because it is expected of them. You condition them to share, which they do to please you. Around age 6, a child is fully capable of being empathetic towards others. At this age, your child should understand the importance of sharing and why it is important when making friends.

How To Teach Sharing

Demonstrating sharing in front of your child will show them that it is a normal interaction. If you model generosity towards others in front of your kids, they will want to copy you. Keeping things equal among children will encourage them to be inclusive with others. If that same generosity has been offered to them, they will want to reciprocate. Making sharing a normal interaction within the household will become second nature to your children, and will benefit them in the future.

Sharing brings joy amongst everyone, and is a vital skill in making friends at an early age. Display good behavior and kindness, and your children will likely follow. Looking for childcare in The Woodlands, Texas? Interested in learning more? Visit our programs page or contact us today!
