How to “Child-Proof” Your Home

Once your child is mobile, the household items that could cause them harm are more accessible. Therefore, you must be proactive in ensuring your child cannot easily access these items. It’s time to “child-proof” your home! The Kangaroo Forest has compiled a list of tips for “child-proofing”:

Identify the dangers

There are more household items that could pose a threat to your child’s safety than you’d think there are. In order to identify the dangers, you must think ahead and consider what items may seem appealing to a curious child or baby. What items are unsafe to ingest and are these items put away? Furthermore, can your child still access cabinets and drawers that contain these items? Can your child reach door knobs leading to rooms that are off limits? Can they open the front or back doors on their own? Are your weapons and firearms secured?

Use outlet protectors and safety latches/covers

Fortunately, there are thousands of child-proofing products on the market today, including outlet protectors, safety latches, and door knob covers. Without outlet protectors, your child is in danger of electrocuting themselves, as they can stick their fingers or objects in the outlets. Without safety latches on cabinets, children can access poisonous cleaning products and chemicals, sharp objects, and weapons with ease. Without door knob covers, children can gain access to rooms that are off limits or can easily let themselves outside.

Be aware while cooking or performing household chores

As a parent, it’s easy to believe that your child is safe in your care. However, with children, danger can arise in an instant - even under direct supervision! Therefore, it is crucial that you approach household activities with care and awareness. When cooking, turn handles of pots and pans toward the back of the stove top, so they are out of your child’s reach. When cleaning, avoid leaving cleaner out on the counter; spray cleaners as needed and return the bottles back to the cabinet when you are not using them.
